Safari

Six Flags Great Adventure has scheduled some big changes for its popular Six Flags Wild Safari attraction. For many years guests of the safari have followed the 4.5 mile path through the 350 acre sanctuary seeing all different animals they might have only seen on TV.  It had remained as the largest drive-thru safari outside of Africa. Park President John Fitzgerald said that while there will be changes, all the animals will remain at the Jackson facility. While significant changes are on our horizon, they promise that the veterinary and animal husbandry staff will continue to provide excellent care for the more than 70 species of exotic and domestic animals that live here at Six Flags.

Wild Safari closed on September 30 to drive-thru guests.

New for 2013 — Safari Off Road Adventure
The all-new Safari Off Road Adventure will take you on an intense, up-close animal experience unlike anything you've ever encountered. Splash through ponds, climb hills, cross bridges and venture over rugged terrain and it's all included with your theme park admission!

I am not so sure that the new adventure will be as much fun.  My friends and I drove through the Safari on one of the last days before its closing on September 30, 2012.  Like next year, if you are on one of those tour buses.  Will they stay an extra minute if you see the lions are especially active right now?  Could you yell out to the driver, "Hey, wait a sec,  I just got my camera in focus!"  Or would you be able to say, "Wow, that is f--in' awesome!"   Hopefully they will give you special diet cookies to feed to the giraffes but the way laws go today I doubt that you will be able to encourage the animals in any way.

I also enjoyed the kangaroos, lamas and the baboons but my photos were not up to my standards.

Here's one of the security trucks that were quite active in assuring that everyone followed the no windows down rule.  Of course most people were testing the limits but if you persisted the police would be summonsed to take care of the situation.  My sister said long ago she took a tour and one of the animals --I think it was a bear--was pushing on a vehicle and the guards pulled a gun out as a precaution.  Quite a traumatic event for a little kid to witness.

Sometimes the big cats play just like two kittys at home would.

This swan was resting so comfortably on the road.  You can tell they do not pay attention much to all the traffic that had to swing wide so as not to disturb this one:

The animals were exciting enough for me

but there are always those that are addicted to adrenalin :
